Why?
Click ->bbkRC 2008-1 to download the Installation file. It is about 22Mb. Save it to your hard drive or a memory stick in case you need to use it again.
Details of how to use the new features will be added during October 2008. You can upgrade now and explore or you can wait until the details are added.
Windows Vista introduces many features to protect you from outside interference, but in the process restricts flexibility, to the extent that it can be tedious, very difficult and sometimes impossible to do things you would regularly do with XP.
You get the impression that "Vista knows best" and when what you want to do is blocked, it remains blocked.
In order to run bbkRC (and many other programs) you need to disable the main "protection", User Access Controls and as a result Vista sulks and does it's best to get you to turn them on again, or turn them on itself while you are not looking.
The final insult is that despite their being three reasonable and free voices with XP (Mike, Mary and Sam) there is only one free voice available for Vista.
Disabling User Access Controls
Before bbkRC 2008-1 can be installed and run, disable User Access Controls. Check with the Vista Help for instructions on how to do this and follow the instructions carefully. Vista will not allow this by default.
As an alternative to Vista Help Here is a web link showing how to Disable User Access Controls
Turning off User Access Controls makes Vista less secure. Similarly, unlocking your car door makes your car less secure, but you do then have the benefit of being able to get into it and drive somewhere.
The benefit of Disabling User Access Controls is that you will have seen the last of the endless "Someone has requested xxx. Do you wish to allow this?" dialogues and in the long term you will be less likely to punch the screen.
Beware, Vista Updates will keep trying to enable User Access Controls so you will have to be diligent.
If you really don't want to go down the Vista route, you can, despite what the lad at PC shop told you, still buy a quality PC that runs XP. Look out for a Vista License with an XP downgrade. It still counts as a Vista License so Microsoft can claim it but if has a "downgrade" applied so it is really XP. Dell tell me these will be available until December 2010. After all, how many businesses do you think would put up with Windows Vista?
The install will update your previous version and preserve your settings.
bbkRC 2008-1 is compatible with previous Race Databases and backups.
